Once you’ve started to come to terms with the amazing discovery that you’re pregnant, you’ll probably be watching out eagerly for the first sign of your bump!

Every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy, but it won’t be long before your notices some changes in your shape and realise this is a great chance to invest in fashionable clothes that reflect your excitement...

1. How quickly will I need maternity clothing?

Every woman’s experience is different, even with successive pregnancies, so it’s hard to compare your pregnancy with anyone else’s. You may notice your bust increases first - to the delight of your partner!

In any case your top priorities are likely to be comfort and style, after all, how’s a girl to survive morning sickness when her waistbands are starting to pinch?!

Our garments incorporate novel ways to adjust the size as you grow, so you’ll get the best value by buying early.

2. Couldn’t I simply make do with larger sizes rather than buy maternity?

Today’s maternity clothing is all about allowing expectant mums to continue with their own style - after all, you’re still as busy as ever and still need to dress quickly and fashionably in the morning.

Our clothing is designed to enhance your developing body shape, particularly the areas that will see the most change - your bust, hips and belly.

Adjustable clothing is also a godsend in those weeks after the baby is born, as your body gradually returns to its former shape. We hope you’ll want to wear our styles long after!

Of course there’s always a time for outsize jog pants and shapeless T-shirts, but who wants to wear them to the office, let alone a night out?!

Elasticised waistbands on maternity clothing often have adjustable button elastic. For comfort and fit simply adjust the width by moving from one buttonhole to the next as your bump grows.

3. Help, I’m on a budget!

Your new family member is eagerly awaited, and we know this is a time when your finances take as much strain as your waistband!

You want to look pretty, sexy, and stylish without breaking the bank, and Venus is on the case, with a range of versatile essentials to suit all pockets!

Simply focus on the basics and accessorise from your existing wardrobe; and don’t worry at all – becoming a mother need never mean abandoning your sense of style!

4. Do I need maternity bras?

As soon as your normal bras start to get uncomfortable, get yourself properly fitted – it may be an expensive mistake to simply go up a size because your ribcage expands during pregnancy as well as your cup size.

Few women find upsizing their normal bra is satisfactory – the best pregnancy bras include an inner ‘sling’ for firmer support without compromising style, and an elongated cup so they last you longer as you grow. They make use of the softest fabrics and avoid cup seams for cool comfort on particularly sensitive skin. Underwires are another consideration - many of us wear metal underwires routinely, but, as they can’t expand with you so well as softer cups, they may put unwanted pressure on sensitive breasts.

Pregnancy bras are designed for maximum comfort as your body shape changes, whereas nursing bras allow one-handed access for easy, discrete feeding.

At Venus we’re great believers in wearing the right bra – pregnant or not, a poor fit can do unnecessary damage to your look. Right now your breasts deserve the very best of care - not only are they giving you curves to die for, they’ll soon be nourishing baby!

We offer a measuring and fitting service to ensure the very best support & fit, complimented by one of the largest ranges of pregnancy & nursing bras in the UK.

5. Big knickers!

Whether you’re a hi-leg, string or bikini brief girl, you’ll find it’s worth investing in well-designed maternity underwear when you’re pregnant. Our pretty, seamless underwear is designed to support your growing tummy and your lower back.

6. What size should I buy?

Try on clothing in the size you usually wear – it’s designed to take account of your pregnancy, and is often adjustable to accommodate your growing tummy!

Our skirts and dresses are always cut so that the hem hangs evenly front and back as your bump grows and because your breasts will get bigger, shirts and dresses are cut a little more generously across the top so they will feel comfortable right through your pregnancy.

The following table indicates how Venus sizes translate to your pre-pregnancy size.

Sizing Chart
Your size before pregnancy Suggested Venus size
8 S
10/12 M
14/16 L
18 XL

7. Our guide to the essential pregnancy wardrobe

  1. First, invest in a pair of stretch black trousers in an easy wearing fabric like bengaline, stretch cotton or stretch jersey for sassy comfort at work, home or out on the town.
  2. Then start looking for a pair of jeans or a denim skirt – there are great boot cut styles and unless you really think you can manage for almost a year without denim, it’s best to buy early to get the most wear out of them.
  3. Your first pregnancy is the time to eat out – sounds crazy to you now, I know, but once the little one arrives you’ll be glad you made the most of your free evenings! We recommend treating yourself to a great dress – great value too as you all you need to add is a pair of strappy shoes and a necklace and you’re hot! You can ‘dress’ it down with knitwear for work, or to visit the in-laws!
  4. You may need something to exercise in too - a little regular exercise will lift your spirits as well as your heart-rate, and you need to be in good shape if you’re to play footie with your new daughter or son in ten years time!
  5. Last on the essentials list is at least one black and one white shirt. You can pair either with just about anything to look smart or hippy in moments.

Venus offers capsule combinations at fantastic prices, teaming essential items into great value packages… come and see us soon!
